Birds Of Fire Enter Last Five Games Of The Season Hot!

The 20-18-1 Firebirds are 6-0-1 in their last seven games. Everything is starting to come together for the Firebirds entering the last five games before playoffs. The Firebirds have passed Harwich for third place in the East with back-to-back wins over the Mariners. They won the first game 8-2 and scored all eight runs in the ninth inning. In the second game, Jayce Boyd (Florida State) drove in 6 runs to power Orleans to a 14-3 win. Kolten Wong (Hawai'i) is back to hitting and leads the league with his .341 average. The Firebirds as a team sit in fifth in batting average (.229) and are .001 out of third behind Bourne (.230) and Falmouth (.230). Orleans' 2.39 ERA leads the Cape League by 0.21 over Brewster.

Around the league, Orleans and Yarmouth-Dennis are streaking, Brewster is slumping, Chatham was slupming and has not been able to move out of last place, and Harwich has lost two in a row and slid into fourth place. In the West, the race for first place is within three points [Cotuit-40pts, Bourne-38pts, and Wareham 37pts] and the race for fourth is within five points [Falmouth-31pts and Hyannis-26pts]. Also, first place Cotuit just signed Barret Loux (Texas A&M). Loux was the 6th overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft.

As I said a little over a week ago, we are entering the August stretch of the summer where the Firebirds' attendance peaks and 'Mr. Firebird' pumps up the crowd along the right field line. Also, I am heading up to the Cape tomorrow morning. This means that my blog posts will be shorter but there will be more Twitter updates. You can follow my Tweets on the right side of the page or at www.Twitter.com/OrlFirebirds. Also, the official Firebirds' Twitter page, www.Twitter.com/FirebirdsCCBL has very in-depth updates.

Carpenter's Near No-No Caps Orleans' 3-1 Win Over Bourne!

Ryan Carpenter (Gonzaga) took a no-hitter into the ninth inning for the Firebirds. Creede Simpson (Auburn) pinch-hit to start the ninth inning and tripled to deep right to break up the no-hitter. Scott Woodward's (Coastal Carolina) sacrifice fly then scored Simpson. Marcus Stroman (Duke) relieved Carpenter and shut the door on Bourne to record his eighth save of the summer.

Bourne's starter, Will Jolin (UConn) took a no-hitter through five innings until Kolten Wong (Hawai'i) broke it up with a single. Steve Selsky (Arizona) then drove him home with an RBI double to give Orleans a 1-0 lead. Jayce Boyd (Florida State) grounded out to second to move Selsky over to third base. Riccio Torrez (Arizona State) singled home Selsky to give Orleans a 2-0 lead. In the eighth, Ronnie Shaeffer (UC-Irvine) doubled home Jayce Boyd to provide Orleans with some insurance.

Ryan Carpenter took home the win, Will Jolin got the loss, and Marcus Stroman got the save. Carpenter's nine strikeouts, one hit allowed, and one earned run helped drop his ERA to 2.43. Stroman has been outstanding on the summer. He allowed no hits and struck out one tonight, and has not allowed a run in 23 innings pitched this summer.

The Orleans Firebirds improve to 17-18-1 on the season and sit one point behind Harwich who lost tonight in a great comeback by Wareham. However, Harwich plays Y-D in a double header tomorrow. Orleans moves eight points ahead of Chatham for the final playoff spot in the East. The Firebirds host Cotuit tomorrow night at 7:00pm at Eldredge Park. You can tune into the Firebirds' TeamLine Broadcast tomorrow night to see the game. The link is located in the "Helpful CCBL Links" page on the bar near the top of the page.

Playin' A Little Catch Up Entering The August Stretch

Wow, it seems like it has been a while since I've posted. I am heading up to the Cape in a week and I've been working a lot lately. Any way, I am going to catch you up on how the Firebirds have been doing; so here we go.

The Orleans Firebirds are now 16-18-1 and have 33 points. They currently sit six points ahead of Chatham who has 27, and three points behind Harwich's 36 points. They are battling Chatham for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East while trying to catch Harwich at the same time. Brewster has lost three games in a row and the East Division is starting to become a lot closer. On the same token, Orleans has played three more games than Y-D, Chatham, and Harwich, and one more game than Brewster.

Three Firebirds were recently named to the CCBL East All Star Team. Here are the links to the East and West rosters. Kolten Wong (Hawai'i) will start for the East All Star Team at second base. Kyle Simon (Arizona) will bring his 0.95 ERA into the All Star Game for the East. Also, the Firebirds' closer, Tom Gordon Marcus Stroman (Duke) will come into the All Star Game with 7 saves and 0 runs allowed in 22 innings pitched. The All Star Game is July 28th, 2010 at Fenway Park at 7:00pm. Buy Tickets Here

On the Upper Cape, Bourne and Cotuit lead a very tight West Division. Bourne is 17-15-0 and Cotuit is 16-14-2. They both have 34 points. Hyannis sits in last place even though they are just ten points behind Bourne and Cotuit.

Kolten Wong has had one hit in his last five games, dropping his average to .312 (which is still a great average in this pitchers' league that we know as the Cape League). Steve Selsky (Arizona) has been unstoppable lately and has hit in his last five games, increasing his batting average to .259 on the summer. Selsky sits in third place in the Cape League with 4 home runs. Also, I thought I'd include that Orleans (as usual) leads the Cape League in attendance with an average of 1,664 fans per home game.

We now enter the last stretch of games before the playoffs that I like to call the "August Stretch". This usually includes the attendance average touching about 2,500 per game. It also means that appearances from "Mr. Firebird" (formerly Mr. Cardinal) will cause an unusually large number of kids to dance along the right field line between innings. Then, they will force the P.A. announcer to yell at them to get off the field.

Koch's Blast And Viramontes's Strong Performance Powers Firebirds Past Hyannis 7-5!

The Firebirds came into the game feeling pretty good after last night's win against Chatham. The 2008 Cape League All Star, Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount) took the rubber for Orleans against Hyannis's Trent Howard (Central Michigan). Viramontes went seven strong innings and allowed only three hits and one unearned run. He walked one and fanned two batters while lowering his ERA to 1.69 on the season.

Viramontes certainly got run support from the Firebirds' hitters. In the first inning, the league's hottest hitter, Kolten Wong (Hawai'i), doubled to lead off the bottom of the first. Kevin Muno (San Diego) moved Wong to second with a single and Jayce Boyd's (Florida State) double play ball scored him. Next inning, Matt Koch (Loyola Marymount) smacked a three-run home run over the fence in left-center field. In the fifth, Jayce Boyd doubled home Kevin Muno.

The Harbor Hawks scored a run in the fourth and two in the eighth to pull the score back to 5-3 in favor of Orleans. The Firebirds struck back in the eighth when Riccio Torrez (Arizona State) hit a double by ground's rule and scored on a squeeze bunt by Will Piwnica-Worms (Duke). Then, Shon Roe (Loyola Marymount) hit a sacrifice fly to score Torrez. Hyannis scored two runs in the top of the ninth but was stopped in the tracks of their attempt to pull off a comeback.

The Firebirds face the Falmouth Commodores on Sunday at Arnie Allen Diamond at 5:30pm. They have won two straight games and moved into fourth place in the Eastern Division. The Chatham Anglers have lost their last six games and sit one point [25] behind the Firebirds [26]. The Firebirds are now in hot pursuit of the Harwich Mariners [30] for third place in the East Division. In case you have not seen, you can follow the race to see who makes the playoffs on our "CCBL Playoff Picture" page. The link is located on the bar at the top of the page. Be sure to check back on Monday morning for an article on tomorrow night's game.

Firebirds Lose No-No In Ninth, Beat Chatham 2-0!

Friday, the frustrated Firebirds came into the game sitting in last place in the Eastern Division. They had lost their last two games by one run and one of those games is still under protest. Plus, they lost Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt) to Team U.S.A.

The Firebirds scored their first run on a bunt by Will Piwnica-Worms (Duke) that scored Riccio Torrez (Arizona State). Chatham's manager John Schiffner was ejected after arguing the close call at the plate. In the seventh, Shon Roe (Loyola Marymount) singled home the second Firebird run. Kolten Wong [3], Riccio Torrez [1], and Shon Roe [2] provided the Firebirds with their six hits on the game.

Cameron Hobson (Dayton), Burny Mitchem (Dayton), and Will Clinard (Vanderbilt) combined for eight innings of hitless baseball. Marcus Stroman (Duke) threw the ninth inning and allowed two hits and struck out one. Stroman picked up his fourth save of the season after a bases loaded double play by Kolten Wong (Hawaii) and Shon Roe saved the game for Orleans. Stroman has thrown ninteen and two-thirds innings without allowing a single earned run!

Orleans hosts Hyannis tomorrow at Eldredge Park at 7:00pm despite Pointstreak saying they host Falmouth. Tune into the Firebirds' Broadcast at http://www.teamline.cc/sport_schedule?teamcode=2653&eventcode=5

Firebirds Beat Harwich, Fall To Y-D, And Fall To Harwich All By One Run

The Firebirds beat the Harwich Mariners 3-2 on Monday. A three-run fifth inning capped the offense for Orleans. Steve Selsky (Arizona) doubled home Jayce Boyd (Florida State) to score the first run. Then, Matt Koch's (Loyola Marymount) single and a throwing error by the left fielder scored Selsky and Preston Tucker (Florida). Ryan Carpenter (Gonzaga) started the game and allowed the two Harwich runs over five and one-third innings. Jack Leathersich (UMass-Lowell), Will Clinard (Vanderbilt), Mitchell Lambson (Arizona State), and the closer Marcus Stroman (Duke) finished the remainder of the game without allowing a hit.

The Orleans Firebirds lost to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 3-2 on Tuesday. Y-D's first three runs came early and Orleans couldn't climb back. Shon Roe (Loyola Marymount) and Preston Tucker drove home the Firebirds' runs. Matt Sisto allowed three earned runs and watch his ERA increase to 1.73 on the season. Kolten Wong (Hawai'i) and Kevin Muno (San Diego) each had three hits for Orleans.

The Firebirds were defeated by Harwich 2-1 in 14 innings on Thursday at Whitehouse Field. Orleans and Harwich each scored a run in the first inning and could not score one throughout the next twelve. Orleans' run was scored on a Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt) RBI single. In the fourteenth, Clint Moore (Army) hit a ball back to Kenny Long (Illinois State). Long threw it passed the first baseman and it seemed that the ball went out of play. Selsky put his hands up to signal to the umpire that the ball had gone out of play, but the umpire did not stop play. Harwich scored on the play and got the win. The Firebirds protested the game and the call will be reviewed.

A Kid And A Cape Leaguer: My Story On My Friendship With A Ballplayer

Two years ago, in 2008, I began to realize that the ballplayers that I looked up to are people too. I live within fifteen minutes of a minor league ballpark and being one that loves baseball, I went to a lot of games. My friend's family hosted a player; which means he pretty much lived at their house when the team was home. A kid who lives up the street from my friend was considering having his family host a player in the next season. One day, he asked a couple of players who he had become friendly with to come over to his house for dinner. I was astonished when they accepted and thought about how neat it was that this was even possible.

That August, I went up to Cape Cod and stayed in a large house in Orleans like my family does every summer. I had been following the Orleans Cardinals (at the time) throughout the entire summer and was so excited to finally get to a game. My family sat on the stage in right field at Eldredge Park; and before my first game of the summer I was getting one of the players to sign my 2008 Orleans Cardinals Yearbook. Because he was a returning player from the previous season, I began asking him questions and talking to him about the players I looked up to from the 2007 team. I was shocked at how willing he was to talk to a fourteen year old kid.

That night, I began thinking about the way that the kid who lives up the street from my friend had ballplayers over for dinner. I asked my grandpa if I could do this, and being the selfless person that he is he told me to invite the whole team. I got the 'okay' from my parents and decided to ask a player to come to pizza with me and my grandpa.

That night after the Cardinals' game I went up to the player and told him my name and began talking a little bit more. Then, I asked if he would come to pizza with my grandpa and I. He then wrote his phone number and email address down in my yearbook. He said we could figure out a date and time to make it work. Also, we both agreed that Orleans Villa Pizza had the best pizza in town so we would eat there. I was thrilled and a bit nervous at the same time. I became the center of attention around my big family. My three sisters and six cousins all wanted to come join us.

Pizza day came and my grandpa, my sister Emily, my cousin Maria, and I filed into one of the booths at Orleans Villa Pizza. The only problem was that I lost my voice from screaming at the previous Cardinals' game. My grandpa ordered a large plain pie and a large pepperoni pie. We waited for about ten minutes until the player showed up. He introduced himself to my grandpa, my sister, and my cousin and then we ate the pizza.

My grandpa started most of the conversations due to my inability to speak. He told us all about his background, high school career, and his long road to becoming the ballplayer he is today. He also talked about the Cardinals and his college team for a little bit, too. He was very grateful that I came up with the idea and thankful toward my grandpa who helped make it all possible.

A couple of days later, I left the Cape. I was saddened that I had to leave before the last game of the season, but was happy knowing that I had become friends with a ballplayer.

Throughout the next eleven months, I stayed in touch with him via text messaging. I learned that he was a Christian and a pretty clean person all in all. I turned to him for advice that helped me get through my freshman year of high school. He also told me that if I ever had any questions regarding my religious faith that I could ask him.

The 2009 season came around and he had been invited back to Orleans for another season. This time, he would be playing for the newly named Firebirds. I had very high expectations for the summer, for the team, and for myself. I started a blog and a Twitter page to become more connected to the team.

August of 2009 rolled around and I had not talked to him in about three weeks or so. I had grown out my hair and looked very different from the summer of 2008 (when I had a Mohawk and was four inches shorter).

I showed up at the field with my cousins Matt and Bobby three hours before the game. The Firebirds were taking batting practice so we looked around to find him and go on the field. He was standing in center field and was about thirty feet from another player. A single up the middle was hit his way and rolled under his glove and to the outfield fence. "Nice Catch!" I screamed sarcastically. He turned around and looked at me for a couple seconds, then turned around. Then, he looked at me again and seemed confused. My two younger cousins and I walked out on the field toward him. Then, it was as if a light had gone off in his head and he recognized me.

We scheduled pizza for the same day that Orleans was to host Chatham. This time, all of my sisters and four of my cousins came to pizza along with my dad, grandpa, and uncle. We set up three tables and twelve chairs that spread across Orleans Villa Pizza.

When the ballplayer came in, he filled my dad and uncle in on his background and everything was a lot more casual than last time. The adults and the ballplayer then broke off into a long conversation that could have been about politics, religion, ethics, or all of the above. I chimed in every so often, but mainly stayed out of it.  He also told me a couple of funny stories that happened when he was out fishing with a few other players.

After pizza, he told me to come over to his car with him. He opened the trunk of his car and pulled out a Barnstable Bat and handed it to me. On the bat it read "Shane, thanks for being a good friend!"

Later on that week, my sister Emily came up with an idea. The ballplayer's birthday was coming up soon. She took one of the old Cape League balls we had sitting at our home and wrote "18 Days Until Your Birthday!" on it. The signatures of "Shane, Emily, Hope, Melanie, Maria, Ana, Matt, and Bobby" covered the other blank spots on the ball. It still sits in his room at his home today. For the first time, I felt like my sisters and cousins were joining into the friendship, and it felt pretty cool. Then, my cousin Matt got a bat from him at the end of the summer. This was almost like the player was welcoming Matt into the friendship. The friendship was no longer between two people, but was now between nine people.

The player will not be in Orleans this summer, but we are still in contact via text message, email, and Facebook. I shared my first version of the story with him and he liked it a lot. At 3:58am I received a long text message. He told me to add in the story about the 'Birthday Baseball' and how he still has it in his room. I've been writing about how my friendship with a Cape Leaguer has impacted me, but not about how it has impacted him. At the end of the text message he said that he gets a lot out of our friendship, too. It is cool to see how much of an impact a Cape Leaguer can have in the lives of kids; and how much of an impact those kids can have on his life, too.

Simon Rolls Against Y-D And 'Birds Fall Short To Brewster And Bourne

On Thursday, Kyle Simon (Arizona) took the hill for the Firebirds and continued his dominance. Simon tossed eight innings and allowed five hits, one earned run, one walks, and four strikeouts. Simon's 0.69 earned run average sits among the league leaders along with teammate Matt Sisto's (Hawai'i) 0.84 earned run average. John Brebbia (Elon) threw a perfect ninth out of the bullpen and struck out two. Orleans' bullpen has been "lights out" lately.

The Firebirds' tied the game up in the second on Steve Selsky's (Arizona) RBI single. In the fourth, the 'Birds took the lead on Selsky's solo home run. In the fifth, an RBI single by Jayce Boyd (Florida State) made it 3-1. In the seventh, RBIs by Riccio Torrez (Arizona State) and Jayce Boyd made it 5-1 and a wild pitch scoring Matt Newman (Arizona State) added another.

The Firebirds won this one 6-1 over Yarmouth-Dennis. Also, Danny Muno (Fresno State) was released by Orleans and signed by Yarmouth-Dennis. Muno started for the Red Sox and went 0 for 2.

On Friday, the Firebirds took on the league's top team, the Brewster Whitecaps. They lost this one 4-3 and almost pulled off a great comeback.

The first Firebird run was scored in the third on a Matt Koch (Loyola Marymount) single to score Jason Esposito (Vanderbilt). In the seventh, the Firebirds scored their second run on a Matt Newman single that scored Matt Koch. In the ninth, Preston Tucker (Florida) doubled home Kevin Muno (San Diego) to pull within one run of Brewster. The Firebirds then had runners on the corners and were unable to bring them in.

Cameron Hobson (Dayton) went five innings and allowed three hits, three earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. Burny Mitchem (Dayton) allowed the fourth Whitecap run during his two innings of work on a Kirk Singer (Long Beach State) home run. Kenny Long (Illinois State) allowed one hit and no runs in the eighth and Jack Leathersich (UMass-Lowell) pitched a perfect ninth.

Andrew Gagnon (Long Beach State) got the win and improved to 4-0 on the season. He appears to be one of the better pitchers in the league, along with Matt Sisto, Kyle Simon, and his Brewster teammate Anthony Ranaudo (LSU). Ranaudo is from Jackson, NJ (which is about ten minutes away from where I live) and was drafted very early by the Boston Red Sox in 2010. His starts are being followed closely by the Cape Cod Times and their Twitter page www.Twitter.com/capeleagueCCT.

The Firebirds were rained out on Saturday against Falmouth.

On Sunday, the Firebirds lost to the Bourne Braves 2-0. They struggled at the plate and only had two hits on the game. In the ninth, however, Preston Tucker sent a deep fly ball to the fence that almost gave Orleans a 3-2 lead. It was caught and the game ended.

Andrew Kittredge (Washington) let up the two Bourne runs and got the loss. Kenny Long, Will Clinard (Vanderbilt) and Marcus Stroman (Duke) combined to allow no runs on one hit (allowed by Long).

The Firebirds try to gain ground on Harwich for the last playoff spot on Monday night at 7:00pm.

Firebirds Win 2 In A Row!

On Monday, the Firebirds faced the Chatham Anglers at Veterans Field and won 2-1.

Ryan Carpenter (Gonzaga) started the game and went five and one-third innings, allowing one run, four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. The run came on a Brian Humphries (Pepperdine) sacrifice-fly that scored Dan Paolini (Siena) in the third. Burny Mitchem (Dayton), John Brebbia (Elon), and Mitchell Lambson (Arizona State) combined to throw a perfect two and two-thirds innings. Marcus Stroman (Duke) pitched the ninth and allowed one hit while striking out one. Stroman earned himself the save.

The two Firebird runs came in the seventh and eighth when Will Piwnica-Worms (Duke) and Kolten Wong (Hawai'i) scored unearned runs due to errors.

Today, the Firebirds took on the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox at Red Wilson Field in a game that lasted ten innings. The Firebirds won this one 5-3.

The Firebirds were finally able to benefit from errors in the first inning when Kolten Wong (who reached base on an error) scored on another error.

Matt Sisto (Hawai'i) continued his excellence on the mound so far this season. Sisto went five innings, allowing no runs, two hits, no walks, and four strikeouts. Sisto dropped his earned run average to 0.84 on the season!

Jack Leathersich (UMass-Lowell) (who was released and then signed to a full contract due to the release of Elliott Glynn (UConn)) gave up a two-run home run to Matt Watson (Boston College). In the seventh, Matt Vinson (Arkansas) doubled home a run off of Joe Loftus (Vanderbilt). Loftus was relieved by Will Clinard (Vanderbilt).

In the bottom of the ninth, the Y-D Red Sox loaded the bases against Clinard. Mitchell Lambson came on in relief and was miraculously able to work Orleans out of a bases loaded, no out jam!

The Firebirds took advantage of Lambson's performance and wasted no time at all. Kolten Wong singled, followed by a Matt Newman (Arizona State) single. Then, with one out, Jayce Boyd (Florida State) singled them both home to give Orleans a 5-3 lead. The lead was preserved by Mitchell Lambson's one-two-three tenth inning.

Orleans improves to 9-12-0 and is currently tied with Harwich for the last playoff position. They are off tomorrow but host Yarmouth-Dennis on Thursday.

Also, I found out that the reason Alex Panteliodis (Florida) is not playing in Orleans is because he is having hip surgery over the summer.

Firebirds Fall To Y-D 3-2 And To Brewster 6-2

Sorry for the lack of blog posts; I haven't had much time to blog because of work.

The Firebirds lost to Yarmouth-Dennis yesterday 3-2. Jayce Boyd (Florida State) 'went yard' in his first at-bat as a Firebird. However, Ben McMahan's (Florida) 2-run double in the bottom of the seventh gave Yarmouth-Dennis the lead and eventually the win.

Earlier today, the Firebirds lost to the division leading Brewster Whitecaps 6-2. Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount) struggled early and gave up four runs in the first two innings. Elliott Glynn (UConn) gave up the other two runs. Burny Mitchem (Dayton) and John Brebbia (Elon) finished out the game and threw a combined two and one-third innings of perfect baseball. Matt Newman (Arizona State) went 3 for 4 in the loss and Kevin Muno (San Diego) hit a home run to left.

The Firebirds drop to 7-11 and are quickly falling behind Brewster, Yarmouth-Dennis, and Chatham. The Firebirds host the Chatham Anglers tomorrow on July 4th, 2010. Be sure to watch for some great Firebirds baseball and red, white, and blue bases.

Firebirds No-Hit By Jordan Pries In A 2-0 Loss To Y-D

Yesterday was not the best day for the Firebirds. The night was highlighted by six errors and, of course, Jordan Pries's (Stanford) no-hitter. Pries went all nine innings and walked three while striking out four.

While the Firebirds' bats could not provide any spark last night, Their pitching was still pretty good. Kyle Simon (Arizona) started the game for Orleans and went six and two-thirds innings, allowing three hits, two runs (none of which were earned), striking out two, and walking one. Kenny Long (Illinois State) and Burny Mitchem (Dayton) pitched the rest of the game for Orleans, neither allowing a hit or a run.

The Firebirds try to come back from this tough loss and beat Yarmouth-Dennis on Friday at Red Wilson Field at 5:00pm.
